In the 9th century fierce nationals arrived from the Ural Mountains area and settled down along the Danube in the Carpathian Basin. They were the Magyars, the ancestors of current Hungarians. They founded a strong state here under the rule of the first king, St. Stephen.  At this time Buda and Pest were only tiny villages. The king ruled the country from its palace in Székesfehérvár, from the Queens residence in Veszprém and from the center of the Hungarian church, Esztergom.
